The historic Cayucos Veterans Memorial Hall is home again.
The North Coast vets hall returned to its original location at the foot of Cayucos Pier on Wednesday, roughly four months after crews lifted the 6,580-square-foot building off its old foundation and shifted onto an adjacent parking area as part of an $11 million renovation project.
According to the Cayucos Historical Society, it only took about a half-hour for Dinuba House Movers to roll back the building.
The structure’s new foundation is set 30 inches higher than the old one to protect from sea level rise.
Now crews will start installing the steel beams inside the structure and drive more pier pilings on the back side of the deck. The wood pilings surrounding the vets hall will support an elaborate wraparound deck that will be wheelchair accessible.
Originally known as the Cass Warehouse at Cayucos Landing, the Cayucos Veterans Hall was constructed in 1875 by Capt. James Cass, the founder of Cayucos.
The venue has served as a meeting place for the Cayucos Historical Society, Cayucos Art Gallery and the Cayucos Lions Club — and also hosted weddings and public meetings.
In 2016, the main section of the building was closed due to structural issues, and in 2021, the state fire marshal closed the building entirely.
Groundbreaking on the renovation project began in December 2022. It’s on schedule to to be completed in spring 2024, according to District 2 Supervisor Bruce Gibson’s Facebook page.
